Group Leader Measurement Services

Tony McBee manages the Measurement Services Group that provide critical operation and research support for the laboratory. These services include instrument calibrations, fabrication, design, and maintenance for ORNL's research community and facilities maintenance customers. Measurement Services operates within the Fabrication, Instrumentation, and Inspection Division, a division of the Facilities and Operations Directorate. The Measurement Services group is committed to delivering excellence through high-quality, tailored solutions. Tony has 30 years’ experience of providing laboratory services at different levels in support of the Laboratory’s operation and research mission. 


He served as an Instrument Technician for over 10 years and was assigned to the research calibration and maintenance support team along with other assignments in audio visual, public address, network and security maintenance teams. In this role, Tony was awarded the Bargaining Unit Support award for individual and team accomplishments in 1996, 1998 and 2002. Additionally, he held key leadership roles as data acquisition designer, chief steward, ATLC delegate, IBEW 760 recording secretary, and assisted I&C group with development of calibration methods and procedures. Tony also held Manufacturing Engineering and supervisor roles within the Fabrication Division and Integrated Operations Support Division for 15 years. 


Previously, Tony was the Instrumentation and Controls Group Lead for six years. From 2018-2024, he was responsible for optimizing services of a distinct and versatile technical support group comprised of seventy-four employees with fifteen direct reports. This role included maintaining the I&C group operational budget with focus on business necessities and employee development through detailed planning and team participation. Additionally, Tony and I&C were awarded multiple team and individual awards with UT-Battelle honors in bargaining unit support and continuous improvement. He and other team members were awarded a patent in 2021 for the design and development of a dual gas monitoring instrument. He currently serves as an active member of the UT-B negotiations team and President of the Tennessee Labor Management Foundation.


In addition to his operation leadership through the years, he has also been involved in the community, serving as a volunteer for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Muscular Dystrophy, and adapt toys for disabled children. Tony is also a current ORNL Gives Leadership Giver supporting Anderson Co United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries, East TN Children’s Hospital, and St Jude Children Research. Tony currently serves as the President of the Tennessee Labor Management Foundation, UT-B collective bargaining agreement negotiating committee, ORNL Master Technician Evaluation Committee. Tony holds an associate’s in electronic technology, a certificate for a two-year electrical/electronic course, a Journeyman Wireman for over 15 years, and a variety of additional development education opportunities.
