OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Feb. 19, 2020 — The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Tennessee Valley Authority have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate a new generation of flexible, cost-effective advanced nuclear reactors.

As a reactor physics nuclear engineer, Ben Betzler leverages and develops computational methods to solve questions across nuclear energy—whether it’s finding the best design of a reactor core or repurposing an old tool for a new analysis.

Samantha Erwin of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory has received a Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Science Policy Fellowship.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Feb. 12, 2020 -- Michael Brady, a researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been named fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, or NACE International.

As the second-leading cause of death in the United States, cancer is a public health crisis that afflicts nearly one in two people during their lifetime.

Thomas Kurfess, chief manufacturing officer and senior distinguished scientist for manufacturing at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions
A team of scientists led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that while all regions of the country can expect an earlier start to the growing season as temperatures rise, the trend is likely to become more variable year-over-year in hotter regions.

Researchers at ORNL demonstrated that sodium-ion batteries can serve as a low-cost, high performance substitute for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries commonly used in robotics, power tools, and grid-scale energy storage.

A novel approach developed by scientists at ORNL can scan massive datasets of large-scale satellite images to more accurately map infrastructure – such as buildings and roads – in hours versus days.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory will partner with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to explore ways to deploy expertise in health data science that could more quickly identify patients’ mental health risk factors and aid in
