In a bold step toward transforming how nuclear infrastructure is built, the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in partnership with Kairos Power, has successfully developed and validated large-scale, 3D-printed polymer composite forms for casting complex, high-precision concrete structures that would be technically challenging and costly to produce using conventional methods.

The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and artificial intelligence company Atomic Canyon signed a memorandum of understanding to streamline the licensing process for nuclear power plants with artificial intelligence for license application reviews.

ORNL set a new milestone in nuclear component Âé¶¹Ó°Òô, successfully testing two 3D-printed stainless steel experimental capsules at the lab’s High Flux Isotope Reactor. This achievement marks an important step in demonstrating that additively manufactured components can meet the rigorous safety standards required in nuclear applications.

DOE’s Argonne, Idaho, and Oak Ridge National Laboratories co-hosted the AI x Nuclear Energy Executive Summit: Unleashing the Power for AI. It brought together leaders from national labs, tech companies and the nuclear energy industry to discuss how to meet AI’s energy needs and accelerate nuclear energy via AI.

Six entrepreneurs comprise the next cohort of Innovation Crossroads, a DOE Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program node based at ORNL. The program provides energy-related startup founders from across the nation with access to ORNL’s unique scientific resources and capabilities, as well as connect them with experts, mentors and networks to accelerate their efforts to take their world-changing ideas to the marketplace.

United Rare Earths has licensed two innovative technologies from Oak Ridge National Laboratory aimed at reducing dependence on critical rare earth elements.

The Heartbeat Detector, developed at ORNL and licensed by Geovox Security Inc., detects hidden individuals in vehicles by measuring suspension vibrations. Now using a compact black box and cloud software, the system is more affordable and easier to use, while remaining the industry standard worldwide.

Analyzing massive datasets from nuclear physics experiments can take hours or days to process, but researchers are working to radically reduce that time to mere seconds using special software being developed at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley and Oak Ridge national laboratories.

Scientists at ORNL have developed a vacuum-assisted extrusion method that reduces Âé¶¹Ó°Òô porosity by up to 75% in large-scale 3D-printed polymer parts. This new technique addresses the critical issue of porosity in large-scale prints but also paves the way for stronger composites.

Inspired by a visit to ORNL’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, Jonaaron Jones launched a career in additive manufacturing that led to founding Volunteer Aerospace and now leading Beehive Industries’ external parts business. Through close collaboration with MDF, Jones has helped drive Âé¶¹Ó°Òô in defense, aviation and energy, while growing high-tech jobs and strengthening the U.S. manufacturing base.
